Ben Shaw began DJing in 1992, moving from early hardcore rave to dark jungle
techno, drum n bass, house, and then onto progressive and breaks.
Brought up listening to modern jazz and experimental music, he
learned to play percussion and keyboards from an early age, but it
wasn’t until some years later that he began producing his own music –
signing his first track “Chi Energy” to Fluid Recordings in 1999.
Heavily influenced by the progressive sound, he was inspired by early Sasha
and John Digweed sets, then later making regular visits to 'Tyrant' at The
Bomb in Nottingham and listening to Sasha, Lee Burridge, and Craig Richards
working up their tech-house, progressive, and breakbeat sets.
Ben has released records under his own name and also under the aliases
Sunscape and Gradient.
He went on to produce tracks and remixes for various other labels before
releasing his biggest track “So Strong” feat. Adele Holness on Fire
Recordings in 2001. “So Strong”
proved to be a huge record, landing itself on several compilations including
Dave Seaman's Renaissance, Pete Tong's “Clubber's Bible (part 2)”, and Deep
Dish's “Yoshiesque” to name but a few. The track also received plays on Pete
Tong's Essential Selection for four consecutive weeks as well as making the
number one spot in the US Dance Billboard Charts.
Ben soon started his own label Kubist Recordings with DJ and studio partner
of the time Chris Dee, which saw several 12” releases including works from
Momu, Chab, Koma & Bones, Oli Cohen, Cat Von Trapp and Ben Camp.
Ben
now returns to the studio with a vengeance as his first release of 2008
“Hunters” makes it’s debut on Monad Music.
He is planning many further projects for this year so watch this space…
